The 260-6113-A Event Recorder is normally used to record precipitation measured by a tipping bucket gauge, but it can be used with any instrument that provides a switch closure event (for example, a contact anemometer). A heavy-duty 3-volt electromagnet is energized by the momentary switch closure and advances a ratchet one notch. The ratchet in turn moves the pen up one step on the chart paper. One hundred events are recorded from the bottom to the top of the chart, ensuring data resolution even in the heaviest rains. When the pen reaches the top of the chart, it automatically returns to zero to begin another traverse. A dash-pot slows the pen's descent.
A battery box under the base holds two D cell batteries which power the electromagnet in the recorder. Terminal posts are mounted on the side of the recorder to connect the 2-conductor cable from the rain gauge. Battery terminals are also provided to allow connection of an external battery, such as a 6 volt lantern battery. An external battery may be desirable for cable runs in excess of 500' (150 m). The minimum voltage required to activate the electromagnet is 2.4 volts.
The recorder clock is battery-operated. A switch is used to convert from daily (26 hours) to weekly (176 hours) to monthly rotation. All internal parts of the event recorder are chrome-plated brass and are protected by a dust cover. The instrument base is cast aluminum. The recorder should be used indoors or in an instrument shelter outdoors.
