The Model 280-DCU Self Contained Ultrasonic Sensors use ultrasonic technology to provide a non-contact method of detecting flow, presence, level, volume, proximity, and distance measurements. This versatility makes them ideal for a variety of applications. Ultrasonic sensors are not affected by target surface, color or translucency and they function extremely well in harsh environments. When monitoring liquids, they are not affected by changes in dielectric constant, specific gravity, or viscosity. The sensors are reliable, user adjustable, and require little or no maintenance.
Ultrasonic sensing is very similar to radar. A sound wave is generated by the instrument. If it meets something solid or reflective, such as liquid, it bounces back. The time delay is measured and since the speed of sound is a well known variable, a distance can be calculated. Until recently, however, the many variables in the speed of sound created inaccurate readings. Now with low cost microprocessor technology, these variables can be factored into the equation and eliminated. One such variable is ambient temperature. Many of the series are temperature compensated. Other variables such as waves on a liquid, tank irregularities, agitators, and humidity, are also accounted for when AutoSense is selected.
The resulting output of the sensor is converted into either an analog signal that is user specified, an RS232 computer signal, a relay output, or some combination of the above.
